Maintenance grading of unsealed roads : the `smart' way.

Maintaining unsealed roads is one of the most important and difficult operations performed by grader operators. The major defects encountered include potholes, corrugations, and inadequate or inappropriate pavement materials and when combined with a lack of training and funding, poor geometric design of many unsealed roads and difficult weather conditions can lead to the difficulties experienced by most grader operators. The primary purpose of this article is to provide assistance in the better maintenance of unsealed roads. The information included is based on many years of grading experience that has proven to result in improved productivity and road maintenance savings in excess of 50 per cent. It has been provided to assist grader operators to improve the efficiency of grading activities in a language that can readily be understood. (a).
