The Major Continuous Corridor Project was first initiated over 15 years ago when the City of Red Deer Regional Planning Commission, Federal Government and CP Rail began looking at the possibility of relocating the railway out of downtown Red Deer. At that time it was identified that there was a need to come up with a long range plan to solve the existing and future transportation and urban development problems in the City of Red Deer's downtown area. Alberta Economic Development was also involved in the project as well as Alberta Transportation and Utilities, who provided 90% of the funding required for the project. This paper covers the various steps taken in the Railway Relocation Study since Study since 1978. The estimated total project cost is $78 million including railway relocation, land acquisition, design and construction. Construction on the project started in 1988 with rail construction and in 1989 with road construction. Rail construction was finished in 1990 and the remainder of the project was completed in 1993.
