Following a death of a young boy in a traffic accident in urban Melbourne in 1993, the State Coroner called for the transport industry to "get its act together". He invited the Transport Workers Union and the Victorian Road Transport Association executives to work with him to address the many issues he had been investigating regarding deaths in the transport industry. This was the beginning of the formation of the Transport Industry Safety Group (TISG), which provided a new and structured mechanism for identifying major road safety problems and co-coordinating actions within the heavy vehicle industry. This has resulted in the promotion of and support for, a range of road safety interventions, which have improved road safety within the heavy vehicle industry. The TISG demonstrates in a practical manner, the benefits of a coordinated approach to road safety involving stakeholders from government authorities, coroner and industry organisations.
