Traditionally, major /minor intersections and major links have received priority for accident countermeasures. It is only recently that the accident problems of local streets have received sustained attention, and that countermeasures have been developed which aim to control driving behaviour within the local traffic areas. Data are presented which show that in Melbourne in 1981, 31% of casualty accidents occurred at major intersections 19% at minor intersections and 28% on major links.
