Samenvatting

Auckland City CouncilÆs growth strategy directs resources into town centres and around transport nodes where growth can best be accommodated within the isthmus. The key characteristics of these growth areas are the intensification of residential housing and a higher level of mixed use zoning in the district plan. The likely outcome from this sort of development is that people will live relatively closer to where they attend school and work. The closer people live, the shorter the distance to travel, the more possible it is to walk and cycle to destinations. Given these key characteristics, a ôCycle and Walking Area Planö is undertaken in each growth area (or town centre) to facilitate increased levels of cycling and walking. During the preparation of the Cycling and Walking Area Plan, Auckland City work closely with ARTA, who are asked to undertake School Travel Plans (STPs) in the area.
