One of the strategic objectives of the present government of National Unity of South Africa is to promote public transport use with a goal of achieving a ratio of 80:20 between public transport and private car usage in the year 2020. However, the present structure of most of the cities is not conducive to the development of efficient public transport systems. Chatsworth, a major suburban Durban area has been considered as a case study in this paper. The area is connected to the city centre by public transport systems, mainly bus, minibus and metro rail. Surprisingly, the patronage on the rail system is very low and is decreasing over the years. An attempt has been made in the paper to suggest a methodology based on data flow diagrams to integrate the rail with minibus services. A few policy decisions have also been discussed to make rail system attractive to the public. (A) The French title of the paper is: "Rendre le transport public efficace : une étude de cas".
