This article describes Intelligent Transport System (ITS) projects in three European countries that indicate how to manage the increasing volume of traffic-related data. In June 1996, the Swedish Government commissioned the Swedish National Road Administration (SNRA) to construct a national database for roads (NRDB), in which computers and electronics will help road users provide their way, provide assistance in emergency situations, optimise transport, and perform relevant calculations. The NRDB will have openness, comprehensiveness, and quality assurance. It will be the first step towards a Swedish geographical database for all transport modes. The Netherlands has a Motorway Traffic Management (MTM) system for automatic and operator-controlled traffic management, which was developed and is operated by the Dutch Road Administration. All motorways and access routes around major Dutch cities are fully equipped for MTM. The Netherlands is donating the system to Sweden on condition that, in return, it may use additions and further developments. AutoKontroll has been developed for the Norwegian Roads Authority, for registering motor vehicle inspections, storing information, and passing it on to other systems. Regulations are automatically downloaded in its hand terminal at the time of inspection.
