This book presents a mixture of papers presented at the third conference on fatigue in transportation held in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1998 and solicited papers from other authors. The focus of the meeting was on improving fatigue management practices as we steadily become a 24 hour society. In Parts 1 and 2 of the book several authors review what is known about the causes and control of fatigue and provide an update on the latest research findings about how sleep and alertness might be managed. These papers focus not only on road transport, but also on maritime, air transport and military operations. In Part 3 of the book several authors address the issue of measurement of fatigue and the shortcomings of controlling fatigue by hours of service regulations. Alternative strategies to manage fatigue are discussed in Part 4 of the book.
