Samenvatting

This paper proposes that to manage mobility, an "industry-wide" accepted framework of category definitions for activity and travel information collection is necessary. In Victoria, in addition to ABS information sets, there is the Victorian Activity and Travel Survey (VATS). The paper focuses on VATS categories. VATS has been underway since January 1994 and now includes the activity and travel information for more than 37,000 households in the MSD (Melbourne Statistical District). The MSD bounds the 31 local government areas comprising metropolitan Melbourne with an estimated population of 3.3 million. After each full year of data collection, and within eleven months of collecting the activity and travel information for an additional 5000 responding households in the MSD, VATS becomes available to subscribers and researchers. The paper concludes with some tentative observations of travel and activity trends over six years since 1994 using VATS category definitions.
