Improvement of public transport leads seldom to a substantial decrease of transport by car. The railway connects the urban centres, while the motorway connects the more peripheral areas of the cities. This paper discusses the possibilities for public transport on motorways to compete with the car. The system can achieve a part of the modal split of 10 to 20 %. The investment of the speed-bus system is estimated at 2 to 3 milliard Dutch guilders, which can be partly compensated by less expenses for the traffic and transport infrastructure.
