A mathematical analysis of side impact using the Cal 3D simulation model.

THIS STUDY REPORTS ON AN EFFORT TO SIMULATE THE RESULTS OF A CAR-TO-CAR CRASH TEST AT 48 KPH WITH AN IMPROVED SET UP OF THE CAL 3D MODEL MEETING RECENT IMPROVED DUMMY PARAMETERS BASED ON CADAVER TESTS NOW AVAILABLE IN THE LITERATURE. THE RESULTS OF VARIOUS PERTURBATION STUDIES WITH THE MODEL ARE ALSO REPORTED. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE CRASH TEST USED FOR SIMULATION, THE MODEL AND STIFFNESSES USED IN THE MODEL. THE PERTUBATION STUDIES CONSISTED OF INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE ROLE OF THE INITIAL DOOR INNER PANEL-TO-OCCUPANT CLEARANCE, STIFFNESS OF THE SIDE STRUCTURE OF THE CAR AND A SIDE IMPACT BOLSTER ON OCCUPANT RESPONSE. THE STUDY SHOWED THE APPLICABILITY OF THE CAL 3D MATHEMATICAL MODEL AS A COMBINED STRUCTURAL AND OCCUPANT MODEL TO THE SIMULATION OF CAR-TO-CAR CRASH TESTS.
