Samenvatting

The aim of the present survey is to study motorcyclists' will to participate in extension courses and the influence exterted thereon by participant fees or compensations. A second aim is to see if there is any difference between categories of motorcyclists with regard to sex, age, accident experience, etc. The survey was carried out by means of questionnaires sent to 662 randomly chosen owners of heavy motorcycles, aged 18-25 years. Besides a general description of background data for the studied group such as sex, age, and driving experience etc., on the whole, the results show a positive attitude towards extension courses among motorcyclists. The intention of participating in a future course is high if the course is free of charge or if compensation is offered to the participants. If, on the contrary, the course is subject to a charge the proportion of interested persons rapidly decreases with increasing fee. The kind of compensation most popular with participants is a reduction of the motorcycle insurance. Brake training and training in realising danger and risks in traffic were the items of the course considered to be so important that most of the time should be devoted to those activities. Theory of traffic regulations should be given the smallest amount of time on the schedule. Significant differences concerning the wish for further training between different categories of motorcyclists are evident from factors such as subjective driving skill, subjective way of driving, previous participation in extension courses, opinions on the effects of extension courses, participation in motorcycle competitions and incidents with motorcycles.
