Measurement of the projected frontal area of vehicles : a new contour-tracking laser device in comparison to other methods.

The determination of a vehicle's drag coefficient requires measurements of its aerodynamic resistance and its projected frontal area with high measuring accuracies. The paper gives a description of optical methods for measuring projected areas and details a laser reflection system which operates on a principle similar to that of a light- barrier system but in a reflection mode.
