Although road traffic is not one of the major sources of noise, taken as a whole, noise problems are still the most important aspects when one considers the environmental deterioration caused by road traffic. Motor vehicle noise emission is controlled by national regulations in Japan. These regulations are discussed and improvements are proposed.
