Samenvatting

An unconventional intersection so called “Continuous Flow Intersection” (CFI) is new in the United States, but in recent years, many jurisdictions have begun considering using the CFI intersection as an alternative means of improving traffic flow and reducing congestion at major intersections. In this study, the CFI application is proposed to improve traffic flow at the major signalized intersection of Gude Drive and Frederick Road (MD 335) in Maryland, United States. The main element of the CFI is the removal of the main left-turn movement out of the intersection. VISSIM micro-simulation modeling is used to evaluate and compare traffic operational performance of the proposed CFI with the existing conventional intersection. The primary objective of this study is to measure the effectiveness of the proposed CFI located in Maryland to ensure that this unconventional intersection application helps reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.
