Samenvatting

Changes in exposure to crash risk are accompanied by corresponding changes in crash rates, so exposure measures must be considered when assessing road safety performance. Risks may be estimated for road user groups, vehicle categories and road network characteristics. This paper discusses the use of these exposure measures to improve road safety strategies by sharpening the analysis of crash risks. It uses practical examples from the National Traffic Database, the New Zealand Travel Survey, and presents new exposure information from national roadside alcohol surveys. (Author/publisher)
