This chapter reviews a range of assessment methods and metrics that have been used to assess the impact of distraction on driving performance. The available evidence regarding the reliability, validity, sensitivity, and generalizability of these is discussed. The focus of the chapter is on "direct" driving performance methods and metrics; that is, methods and metricsthat directly assess objective measures of driving performance. Surrogatemeasurement methods, which simulate and assess particular aspects of the driving task, are discussed in subsequent chapters.
