Samenvatting

A multidisciplinary study of children in crashes has been undertaken by Transport Canada and the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Treating physicians obtain detailed medical information on children who were occupants of motor vehicles involved in collisions. In-depth analysis of the associated crashes is conducted by Transport Canada investigators. The medical and engineering teams work collaboratively to determine the underlying injury mechanisms, and to identify potential countermeasures. Preliminary results of the study indicate a preponderance of inappropriate seat belt use, especially by younger children, and several airbag-induced injuries, despite public warnings against seating children adjacent to inflatable restraint systems.
