This guide surveys the relevant considerations affecting medical fitness to drive a road vehicle. The first chapter considers the prevalence of medical factors in road traffic accidents, with special reference to causes of accidents, fatality rates, age, and drivers of large vehicles. The second chapter outlines driving licence law and medico-legal considerations. The third chapter discusses the risks especially affecting older drivers. The remaining chapters cover the relevant medical aspects and effects: (1) cardiovascular disease; (2) diabetes mellitus; (3) epilepsy; (4) neurosurgical disorders; (5) excessive sleepiness; (6) nervous system disorders; (7) mental disorders; (8) vision; (9) medicines and driving; (10) illicit drug and driving; (11) alcohol and driving; and (12) miscellaneous medical disorders. The annexes cover: (1) driving assessments for people with physical disabilities; (2) medical exemptions from seatbelt wearing; and (3) general information about how to help older drivers.
