Samenvatting

Basic information about the day-to-day travel experiences and needs of people with disabilities is crucial in providing for their transportation needs. The Automobile Association has recently completed a study (see IRRD 855063) of 1,130 people with disabilities, examining five key issues: mobility, access, information, communication and choice. The research sought to: a) Identify the range of problems faced by people with a disability when travelling, and on arrival at their destination; b) Discover to what extent these problems limit opportunities; and c) Gauge awareness of services for disabled people and examine their experiences of these services. The research was carried out in two parts: the first involved 10 group discussions amongst people with disabilities and their carers; the second consisted of a nationwide survey, using the information gathered in the first part, to quantify such aspects as how journeys are made, the problems which are encountered and what improvements could be made. The research covered people with various types and severity of disablement. The results indicated that manufacturers, transport operators and public authorities could do considerably more to help people with disabilities. For example, the research studies, in some depth, the modal choices which were made - indicating the difficulties which are encountered while trying to use public transport, as well as the improved lifestyle which was derived from having access to a car. The survey also studied design issues, such as problems with parking, pedestrianisation and entering and leaving cars. Finally, the services which are available to people with disabilities were examined, to quantify people's awareness of and satisfaction with those being offered. This research exercise is not an activity being conducted in isolation - it will also form the basis for AA policies to be promoted with Government and planning agencies. (A)
