In Switzerland, competition for ground space forced the authorities to look for a way to guide the development of the various spatial activities in a specific direction. Thus arose the Swiss federal regional planning law. A declared aim of this law is the economic use of the ground. The economic use of road space, and in particular the multiple use of the national roads, is discussed.
