Samenvatting
Total traffic fatalities are considered to result from a combination of two factors: safety of travel (per vehicle mile or per vehicle) and exposure to travel (distance traveled or number of vehicles). The method proposed, models these factors separately and then combines them for the estimation of fatalities. The United States and Japan are used for illustration. Several possible implications of the results are discussed.
