Samenvatting

The purpose of this report is to draw the attention of engineers in central and local government to the main methods currently available for the rectification of fatted surface dressings which become widespread following exceptionally hot summers (such as that of 1976). the methods are divided into three groups: (1) road heating processes; (2) surface dressing techniques; (3) other miscellaneous treatments. Complete removal and replacement of the surfacing is concluded to be the only permanent remedy in extreme cases, but other methods, perhaps restricted to the wheel tracks only, can prove effective in restoring texture and resistance to skidding where the fatting problem is less acute. Because of wide variations in the extent and degree of fatting, no attempt has been made to compare costs for the methods suggested. (Author/publisher)
