Samenvatting

Most of Michigan's roadway system is under local control. This article describes how local and state agencies have cooperated to implement and useintelligent transportation system applications in the metropolitan Detroit area. The intelligent transportation system installed on the nearly 200 miles of freeways in metropolitan Detroit, Michigan, includes 164 closed-circuit television cameras for real-time freeway traffic surveillance. Although the cameras are owned by the Michigan Department of Transportation, the video images are shared with the Michigan state police and local public safety agencies to allow safe and timely response to traffic incidents. Collaborative approaches such as the sharing of video images can be cost-effective ways to share resources among the agencies responsible for transportation operations and safety.
