Samenvatting

This paper presents results across three large-scale deployments of Intelligent Transportation Systems as part of the Metropolitan Model Deployment Initiative (MMDI). The three MMDI sites were Phoenix, Arizona; San Antonio, Texas; and Seattle, Washington. This paper presents an overview of the evaluations; however, the results focus on the deployments of Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS). Methods for providing traveler information such as web pages and traffic television were found to be usable by the public. Traffic and transit web pages were the clear winners with the users. On the other hand, kiosks for presentation of traveler information were shown to receive little use by the public. The MMDI deployed in-vehicle route guidance and real-time traffic information to public agencies. This was the first major deployment of in-vehicle ATIS to public agencies in the US. The public agency users perceived the systems to increase safety and save time relative to the use of paper maps when finding unfamiliar locations. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
