The extensive use of cars poses a serious threat to the environment.A passenger traffic system for the year 2010 that fulfils a set of stringent ecological conditions is described. This plan, called"Schoon op Weg", is technically and financiallypossible. Recently the Dutch government has also presented a number of plans for the future. In this article these plans are analyzed with a view to the environmental problems.
