About one quarter of all car use in the Netherlands is business travel. Car use for business travel grows faster than other use. Environmental problems caused by business travel can be diminished by improving telecommunication, changing the mode of transport and the use of less polluting cars. Managers are the most likely type of employee to use cars even when alternatives are possible. Changing the mode of transport can lower transport costs and can even reduce travel time. Image, habitual car use and low costs awareness are the most important criteria preventing change. Companies can reduce car use by changing travel modes for business trips and by being more selective in giving out company cars to their personnel. Transport management of commuter traffic could be extended to management of all business related traffic. Taxes could be changed to stimulate the use of public transport, bicycles and less polluting cars.
