A total of 1359 adult occupants were surveyed in three cities in New Zealand. Belt wearing for front seat occupants remains hign, in the range 84 to 93 percent. Only 42 percent of rear seat passengers had belts available and use remains low. A total of 517 children were surveyed. About one quarter travel in the front seat. In the front seat restraint use varies from 20 percent to 87 percent generally increasing with age. In the rear seat restraint use declines with age from 80 percent to 24 percent. There is evidence for a gradual inprovement in provision and use of restraints between 1982 and 1983.
