Samenvatting

In November 1999, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced award of a major Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI) grant to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) and the Minnesota Guidestar program. The award was one of four made nationally to further testing and deployment of IVI systems. Minnesota's project is a three-year Specialty Vehicle Field Operational Test, focusing on the refinement, integration and evaluation of driver-assistive technology. The system currently under development will provide lateral guidance and collision warnings to drivers of snowplows and several other specialty vehicles. The technology employed includes DGPS, magnetic pavement marking tape, radar, a windshield heads-up display, and several types of warning devices. The system design and evaluation will pay particular attention to human factor considerations through extensive simulation and field tests involving drivers.
