This paper describes the results of a survey undertaken to ascertain the effect that mobility impairment has on travel behaviour. Some initial findings from an application of this approach are outlined, and their impact on issues of policy are discussed. The travel survey was undertaken in greater Manchester in June 1990. In this, 2074 respondents were asked questions about the travel they had undertaken the previous day. These included questions about difficulty in using public transport, the transport mode used (bus, train, car, taxi or minicab), the time of day at which the journey was made, and the reason for the disability (old age, pregnancy, arthritis, etc). The results obtained so far indicate that the problem is not necessarily that of being unable to travel but rather the cost of doing so. Both bus and taxi services were well used, but the specialized door-to-door service was not.
