Samenvatting

There are three basic approaches for gathering real-time road traffic information: simple observation; fixed sensor deployment; and floating car data (FCD). In FCD, the travelling vehicle is used as the sensor using global positioning system (GPS) equipment. The problems associated with FCD are outlined. Applied Generics has developed a commercial road traffic information system, RoDIN24, which generates road traffic information from passive monitoring of phones in a mobile network. The architecture of the RoDIN24 system is outlined. As well as being used for traffic analysis, the system can supply real-time road traffic information to drivers. Although the telematics industry is held back by a lack of standardisation, Applied Generics is working with mobile operators across Europe to link information feeds and provide an international service.
