This paper goes into the research design and first results of a Dutch study started in July 1998. The goal of the study is to examine the relationship between elements of spatial structure and transportation demand patterns such as transport mode choice, the number of trips made, and the length of trips. The focus is on spatial elements in the direct neighbourhood of the home, for example the place where cars and bikes can be parked, but also the size and location of the house towards transportation and other facilities. About 1500 households will be interviewed who have participated in the 1990 Time Consumption Survey (TBO). Amongst these households, especially those who have moved will be approached. Besides from interviews concerning household characteristics and travel behaviour, data will be gathered from the places where people lived before and after they moved, by means of observation.
