In 1990, the TNO Institute of Spatial Organization (INRO - TNO) carried out a survey among 2,600 workers at 26 companies in The Hague and Eindhoven. The results of this survey were used in a desaggregated logit model to estimate modal choice in commuter trips. The exogenous variables were based on the characteristics of the companies, locations and commuters. The results of the modelling exercise indicate that there is a strong relationship between mode choice and variables such as: (1) travel time ratios between public transport and the car (determinative for the use of public transport); (2) parking facilities (determinative for both the use of public transport, and pedestrians and cyclists); and (3) travel distances (determinative for the use of these slow modes). One of the conclusions of the study is that traditional classification methods for A, B and C type locations, based on egress characteristics, are inadequate because they do not sufficiently take into account these variables.
