Samenvatting

In 1990, TNO Institute of Spatial Organization (INRO-TNO) carried out a travel survey among 2600 workers of 26 companies in the regions of The Hague and Eindhoven. The mode choice in commuting trips is analyzed using a disaggregated logit model. The exogenous variables chosen were based on the characteristics of both companies and their locations, and the commuters. The results of the modelling exercise indicate that there is a strong relationship between mode choice and the variables. These include: (1) travel time ratios between public transport and the car (determinative for the use of public transport); (2) parking facilities (determinative for both the use of public transport and slow modes); and (3) travel distances (determinative for the use of slow modes). One of the conclusions in the paper is, that traditional classification methods for A, B and C type locations, based on egress characteristics, are inadequate because they do not sufficiently take into account these variables. A revision is therefore needed.
