Samenvatting
This paper describes the results of a survey carried out in Vienna, Austria, to determine attitudes towards cycling as a transport mode. Two groups were targeted: local politicians and citizens. The main barriers to cycling were seen as an incomplete cycle network and lack of consideration from car drivers; but politicians underestimated citizens' perception of lack of safety when cycling in heavy traffic. Both groups agreed on the environmental and health benefits of cycling. Politicians did not realise the extent of citizens' interest in and support for cycling.
