Samenvatting

Humans are good at safely handling a large range of traffic situations even if they do make mistakes every now and then. In order to achieve that, they use an internal representation of the traffic. This representation allows them to react to and anticipate the behaviour of other traffic participants. This paper presents a model for resolving potential conflicts based upon the notion that the development and the outcome of any particular traffic situation can be described with a limited set of generalised scenarios. All traffic participants involved in a particular situation apply their own versions of these scenarios to arrive at a joint outcome of the situation. Since any automation proposed must facilitate this interaction process or at least not disturb it, this model is intended to be used to investigate safety effects of existing telematics and to support the development of new automation.
