Samenvatting

In the "Perspective and development of alternatives for long-term land side accession North Sea and `Great' Schiphol Airport" project, nine accessibility alternatives have been developed for the future national airport of the Netherlands. The starting point was the assumption that the development of the airport is concentrated in one location. Both the existing airport Schiphol and a new location on an island in the North Sea are considered. In order to establish the level of accessibility offered in the different alternatives, the expected traffic load on the multimodal network in each alternative is needed. In a separate project, the traffic load has been calculated using a spreadsheet model. The results are, in turn, used in this study. The results indicate that airport-bound traffic puts a much greater pressure on the road infrastructure than on the rail infrastructure. At many links in the road network, lanes will have to be added to deal with traffic. In addition, on a number of links (Coentunnel, A10 motorway at Amstelveen) non-airport-bound traffic flows already exceed the capacity, and these links are also relatively heavily used by airport-bound traffic. Non-platform-bound employees, all assumed to work at the Schiphol location and mostly travelling in peak hours, are responsible for the heavy loads.
