Modeling overtaking on two-lane highways. A microscopic simulation tool has been developed for 2-lane highways in order to assess the overtaking frequency as function of input variables. Such a tool can be useful for traffic operation research, establishing the level of service and possibly traffic safety research purposes. The paper gives a review of the model structure and underlying behavioural model for overtaking. The first applications of the model show a strong relationship between total traffic flow, directional split, and truck percentage. The validation of the model shows the capability of the model to predict sufficient reliable overtaking frequencies for given road characteristics. (Author/publisher)
