A balanced approach of the bicycle is important for tackling transport and traffic problems at the regional scale. At this scale the share in the modal split is significant with 15 to 20 % of all personal trips. Most present-day regional transport and traffic plans discern this role of the bicycle. A next step is to develop plans for bicycle provisions at the regional scale. A modest start has been made in this paper. Models appear to play an importanat role in this planning process. Knowledge obtained is being transmitted actively to regional institutions. (A)
