MODERN ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES APPLIED TO HIGHWAY MATERIALS PROBLEMS

This article describes studies conducted at the turner-fairbank highway research center in response to general or specific needs identified by the states, the federal highway administration regions, divisions, and other governmental agencies. The research programs aredesigned to solve current or anticipated problems that are affecting or will affect highway operations and maintenance. Examples of research are described in this paper which have resulted from identified materials needs. Thus, epoxy thermoplastics research has successfully produced a more durable, economical and environmentally acceptable lane marking material. Materials for improved bridge deck performance, such as latex modifiers for portland cement concrete and epoxycoated rebars, have been evaluated with emphasis on improved durability and safety, while being environmentally acceptable. Work on pavement materials and tests and specifications is also described.
