Samenvatting

The differing circumstances of the transport of hazardous liquids by road and rail tankers are described. The mechanical design considerations involved in the design of these vehicles is outlined. Causes of failure are listed as are the consequences of failure which are related to the geometry of the escape and the nature of the contents. Appendices provide a scenario which could lead to hydraulic rupture, a discussion of the behaviour of flashing liquids and a note on the acronym BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion).(A)
