Samenvatting

One of the initiatives encouraged by the Department of Transport to reduce road casualties was the introduction of 20mph zones. This report reviews all the 20mph zone schemes now installed or in preparation, describes their main characteristics and considers the effect they have had so far in reducing injury accidents. Statistics are provided for accident rates before and after the implementation of schemes. The effect on the severity of accidents and accident migration are considered. Statistics are provided for the reduction in speed resulting from schemes. Acceptibility to the public is discussed.
