Samenvatting

The authors have developed a new surveillance device for monitoring personal travel behaviour. The data collecting instrument is called PEAMON (PErsonal Activity MONitor). A three-dimensional acceleration sensor is combined with a cellular phone based location positioning unit. This is available in any urban space where the cellular phone signal is detected. Location and acceleration data are collected every 15 seconds. The performance of PEAMON is examined under an actual travel environment in Osaka City. It is found that travel mode as well as origin, destination and route of an individual traveler are precisely traced using the location and acceleration data through PEAMON.
