Samenvatting

This report discusses the results of fullscale experiments to investigate the use of Scottish morainic gravel aggregates in wet aggregate, oiled-gravel and hot dense surfacings. Wet-aggregate surfacings were found to be satisfactory for the very light traffic conditions of the experiment, but no conclusions can be drawn on the suitability of the material for more general use. The performance of the oiled-gravel surfacings was found to be so variable that no recommendations for their use can be given. Surfacings made from hot dense mixtures were found to be durable over a wide range of aggregate gradings and binder contents and a specification for these materials is given. Details are also given of a successful specification trial laid at Muir of Ord in 1968. (Author/publisher)
