A three-dimensional theory of motion discomfort is developed by defining scholar indices measuring discomfort due to acceleration and jerk. These indices are functions of effective acceleration and jerk vectors and their orientation to the preferred configuration of a subject. The optimal bank angle of a guideway is defined and shown to minimize acceleration discomfort. Isotropic approximations to the discomfort indices are proposed.
