After summarizing general automobile lighting principles, and reviewing U.S.A. & European designs, the author discusses the advantages and, in some cases, necessity of a self levelling device. General self levelling design principles are established and several practical solutions reviewed. Details are given of a hydraulic leveller and the compensation of thermal variations.
