The Motorcycle Accident In-Depth Study (MAIDS) is the first multi-national example of on-field application of the methodology developed by OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). The Motorcycle Industry in Europe, gathered in ACEM, is sponsoring this project in co-operation with the European Commission with the aim of providing scientifically based knowledge of motorcycle accidents in Europe, identifying risk factors and suggesting possible solutions. In this effort, ACEM is co-operating with a wide range of stakeholders in 5 European countries: France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, and Spain. Several practical problems arose in putting into practice the OECD methodology and in co-ordinating the work of 5 teams collecting the data. Moreover, the statistical analysis of the large quantity of data made available by the accident data collection requires a high degree of consistency. This paper outlines the main features of the OECD methodology together with a presentation of the organisational and procedural solutions adopted by the MAIDS consortium.
