Motorcycle handling dynamics and rider control processes are investigated to quantify rider-machine response and performance, and to determine the effect on handling performance of changing machine design configuration. Alternative multiple-loop rider-machine system control structures are also investigated. The rider-machine control analyses begin with a summary of rider dynamic response properties, and the derivation of motorcycle equations of motion. Lateral-directional control by means of upper body lean and steer torque are emphasized. A number of rider feedback loops are reviewed.
