In the last years a multitude of projects have been carried out around the world to investigate motorcycle accidents. This article presents some of the findings obtained and gives 56 references. The results presented here are for example main accident location, accident causes, apportioning of blame in car-motorcycle collisions, injury frequency concerning the head and the lower extremities, direction of collision, etc. Furthermore references are given to findings dealing with constructive conversion of the results of motorcycle accident research, like improvements in crash helmet or motorcycle clothing design, motorcycle airbags and leg protection. Leg protection is examined with special regard to positive and negative aspects. The article ends with some attempts to define the goals of motorcycle safety research.
