Samenvatting

The report describes the behaviours, knowledges, and skills required in the safe operation of motorcycles. It was prepared for use by those engaged in the development of instructional programs, in design of instructional materials and devices, in development of test programs, and in the establishment of operating practices - for anyone whose work requires a knowledge of what it takes to operate a motorcycle safely. The report is arranged under the following main headings: (1) basic control - tasks required in controlling the motion of the motorcycle, including those preparatory activities which precede operation. (2) roadway characteristics - tasks related to characteristics of the roadway including its configuration, surface, and appurtenances. (3) traffic characteristics - tasks created by the presence on the roadway of other road users. (4) environmental characteristics - tasks created by the varying characteristics of the general physical environment, including weather, temperature and illumination (day-night). (5) off-road characteristics - tasks created by the unique characteristics of the off-road environment. (6) operator characteristics - tasks created by the varying characteristics of operators and the requirements placed upon operators by law. (7) motorcycle characteristics - tasks required by the motorcycle to keep it in safe and lawful operating condition. (8) passenger and cargo characteristics - tasks created when the motorcycle is used to transport cargo or passengers in addition to the operator. The behaviours in each section are classified according to tasks. For the purpose of this report, the word "task" refers to a group of behaviours related to one another by having a common purpose or involving similar sets of behaviours.
